Walking into Bodega Albarizas is like walking into a barrel of wine. During our research for an upcoming post on wine bars in Valencia, we discovered this new little gem and couldn’t wait to share it. Bodega Albarizas has just about everything we’re looking for in a wine bar: a variety of wines by the glass, wine-friendly food, and a casual bar setting.
The inside of the bar is enveloped in wood planks designed to look like the inside of a barrel. Not only is it a clever way to make the small space special, but it puts you in the right frame of mind for a glass of wine.
The friendly face behind the bar is Alba Sanchez Villanueva and this is her place. She is an Enóloga (wine expert) who studied agriculture and wine making in Valencia. Our entire conversation with Alba took place in Spanish but there seems to be a universal language when it comes to wine lovers. She was very patient with our poor Spanish and was excited to talk about her wines.
Bodega Albarizas is both a wine shop and a bar. There are wines by the bottle to purchase for take away at reasonable retail prices. If you want to open a bottle to drink in the bar, there is an extra charge of about €2 to €3. With just the two of us, we prefer to sample different wines by the glass. She had four whites, four reds, and a cava available. At just €2 – €3 euros per glass, we worked our way through several. It is also a special treat to find five sherries by the glass. This is an unusual find in this part of Spain so we are fortunate that Alba is a big fan of sherry.
The kitchen is tiny but produces an impressive selection of tapas perfect for pairing with wine, including cheeses, jamons, sausages and conservas. The mousse de pato con membrillo (duck pate with quince paste) was very good and only €2 for two toasts.
Bodega Albarizas just opened in the spring of 2017 in the neighborhood of Mestalla, east of the Turia Gardens. We were lucky to have found it just in time for our upcoming list of wine bars in Valencia.
